I hope you are having a safe and happy summer! Our new health insurance became effective July 1st. We are aware that some members’ paperwork was not immediately processed by the State and some had to resubmit their paperwork. Kelly Vazquez, health benefits clerk has been working to resolve all outstanding issues to ensure that all eligible members are in the State Health Benefits Program.
Some members have been given incorrect information from our insurance carriers. For example, a member was told that her children had to wait a year to receive braces. After reviewing the policy (Dental Expense), we found that only new employees have to wait a year for a child to receive new braces. The member called the Aetna number- 1-877-782-8365 and the issues were resolved. Please check the policy information and contact me and Aetna or Horizon if you believe you are given inaccurate information.
As always, the ACEA Office remains open during the summer. We are planning activities and workshops for next year. Enclosed are the forms for our very popular “XYZ’S of Retirement” Workshop that will be held on November 18th at 9:00 at the Sheraton Convention Center Hotel in Atlantic City. The workshop fills up quickly, so hand in your form today!
The ACEA continues to work hard to ensure the contract is enforced. Two grievances were recently filed on behalf of all effected members. An email dated 5/19/17 was sent to all employees in the Atlantic City School District. The memo stated that effective July 1st, members will no longer be able to use their sick days for approved family leave. This is a unilateral change is past practice and a violation of our contract. It is also not pursuant to what the New Jersey Family Leave Act and New Jersey Family Insurance regulations permit. Our remedy sought is that the district must continue to allow members to use their sick time for approved family leaves and if members are forced to go on unpaid leave, they must be reimbursed.
The ACEA also filed a grievance on behalf of all members due to the fact that the Board is requiring members to premium share for dental and vision benefits. We believe that since we are now with the State Health Benefits Program, that pursuant to Chapter 78 we should not be premium sharing for dental and vision insurance. Our remedy sought is that members must be reimbursed for premium sharing for dental and vision insurance.
If both of these aforementioned grievances are not resolved, we will file them at the arbitration level. We will continue to keep you informed! Knowledge is power!
